Cooperation with the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights

On March 25, 2024 a meeting was held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) with the representatives of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (Siracusa Institute) - President Jean-François Thony and Director General Filippo Musca.

 

Within the scope of this meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Institute for Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law of the TSU Faculty of Law and the Siracusa Institute, which aims to implement research, educational, training and academic activities between the institutes.

 

TSU Rector Jaba Samushia, Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili, TSU Faculty of Law Dean Tamar Zarandia, and Deputy Dean Giorgi Dgebuadze outlined the activities of Tbilisi State University and the Faculty of Law, upcoming events, and identified opportunities for collaborative initiatives. The meeting was also attended by Mirian Megrelishvili - Head of the Professional Development Center of the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, Rusudan Tsagareli – a staff member of the Dean’s Office at the TSU Faculty of Law.

 

Within the framework of cooperation with the Institute for Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law of the TSU Faculty of Law, the Siracusa Institute presented its initiative - "REACT" - The Regional Atrocity Crimes Training Platform, that aims to facilitate professional development through qualification-raising trainings and courses tailored for investigators and prosecutors. The TSU Faculty of Law is actively involved in this initiative and in cooperation with the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia it is scheduled for implementation in the upcoming months.

 

The cooperation between the Institute for Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law of the TSU Faculty of Law and the Siracusa Institute will significantly contribute to the advancement of criminal law research in Georgia and foster collaboration through joint events.

 

Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, a seminar organized by the TSU EuroClub was held within the framework of the cooperation between the TSU Faculty of Law and the Young European Ambassadors (EU Neighbours East): ”Challenges of International Criminal Law in regard to the Principle of Complementarity“, which was led by the President of the Siracusa Institute Jean-François Thony and the Director General of the Siracusa Institute - Filippo Musca.

 

The President and Director General of the Siracusa Institute informed the participants of the seminar about the activities of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights - an educational, research institution in the fields of international and comparative criminal justice and human rights, as well as about the challenges of international criminal law in relation to the principle of complementarity.
